At Mercari, we refuse to remain silent in the face of injustice and racism against the Black community. I’ve been talking with and listening to Mercari’s employees, as well as friends and colleagues outside of the company. These have been difficult and painful conversations. Because of everything I’ve heard, I believe more energy should be spent on actions to end racial injustice. Here’s what we’re doing:

Our actions: As a company we have donated $100,000 to the Equal Justice Initiative. EJI is committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, to challenge racial and economic injustice, and to protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society. We are also establishing ways to enable our employees to support similar causes.

Ensuring the company doesn’t enable racism: Listings, and any communication between users, involving racism or hate are not tolerated on Mercari. Our teams work around the clock to take down listings that support or promote racism or hate. If you come across such listings or communication, please let us know so we can take action.

Looking inward: I acknowledge that we can be doing more to safeguard diversity and inclusion in our own company and I am making a commitment to this directly, especially for Black individuals as well as other minorities.

And ultimately, I commit to continuing to listen, taking action for the long-term and redirecting attention to the voices who can best speak on the challenges of the Black community.
